Confederation 75
Background Decoration

2024 marks the 75th year of the province’s Confederation with Canada. Newfoundland and Labrador’s entry into Canada on April 1, 1949 was the latest chapter of our unique political evolution from colony to Dominion to province of Canada. Arguably the most studied aspect of Newfoundland and Labrador’s political history, Confederation is a milestone that, even 75 years later, still sparks conversations.

While Newfoundland and Labrador is the youngest province, it has been a strong and equal member of confederation. Our contributions range from our ample and rich natural resources, to our emerging tech sector, to being a bucket list destination for every tourist in Canada. Perhaps the biggest contribution we have made to Canada is our culture. Newfoundland and Labrador’s cultural identity is what truly defines us with our most recognized national and international exports coming from our arts and cultural sectors.

The Confederation 75 Celebration Grant Program offered funding to communities, heritage organizations and Indigenous groups in Newfoundland and Labrador wishing to commemorate this historic anniversary. The application deadline for this program has now passed and payments have been issued. We thank all applicants for their interest in commemorating this historic milestone.

Together, let us honor the past, celebrate the present, and embrace the future as we commemorate 75 years of Confederation with Canada.
